The Foundation opened a branch in Berlin in 2015 where the archive is kept and work on it carried out. Thomas Weski has been Foundation curator since the fall of 2015 and is also responsible for curating the Michael Schmidt retrospective in 2020. Weski was formerly curator of photography and media at various museums and from 2009 to 2015 professor of “Cultures of the Curatorial” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig.
The Foundation for Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive is currently working with the Nationalgalerie in Berlin to put together an extensive retrospective of the work of Michael Schmidt, to be shown in 2020 on what would have been the artist’s 75th birthday in one of the Nationalgalerie’s museums.
“Michael Schmidt’s work is regarded as one of the keystones of 20th-century German photography. The Nationalgalerie considers itself very fortunate to be able to honor this great and important artist with a comprehensive retrospective,” said Udo Kittelmann, director of the Nationalgalerie.
