The Foundation for Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Hanover. It was founded by Berlin-based photographer Michael Schmidt, the Deutsche Sparkassen- und Giroverband e.V. and the Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale as well as further members of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe as additional supporters.

The foundation’s statutes describe its goal as promoting and supporting contemporary photography and media art since 1970. It secures and preserves cultural heritage in the form of works and archives of important contemporary photographers and media artists. The foundation also strives to build broader cooperation between institutions that integrate photography and media art in their exhibition concepts, or which have corresponding collections.
