Michael Schmidt, who died in 2014, is regarded alongside Bernd and Hilla Becher as one of the seminal postwar German photographers. His works can be found in national and international collections and have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Schmidt’s project “EIN-HEIT/U-NI-TY” was featured in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1996. With book and exhibition projects such as “WAFFENRUHE” (Ceasefire, 1987), “EIN-HEIT”/ “U-NI-TY” (1996), “FRAUEN” (Women, 2000) and “LEBENSMITTEL” (Foodstuffs, 2012), Schmidt added an influential chapter to the history of photography.
